In Memoriam: Richard A. Young

August 4, 1937 - November 27, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard A. Young, a distinguished member of our legal family. Richard was an integral part of the history of Martin Clearwater & Bell LLP (MCB), contributing significantly to our growth and success during a transformative period.

In 1975, Richard A. Young, along with colleagues Francis P. Bensel and George van Setter, assumed the role of owner partners, ushering in anew era for MCB. Richard, a former Associate of the Mudge, Rose, Nixon Firm, played a pivotal role as the Firm's first Managing Partner. His visionary leadership led to the implementation of crucial management systems that continue to underpin the Firm's administration to this day.

Richard exemplified top-quality representation. He was a successful litigator who was passionate about trying cases. His dedication to excellence and strong work ethic became the cornerstone of MCB’s culture, a legacy that continues to shape who we are today.

Richard's life, marked by dedication, compassion, and numerous achievements, extended beyond the professional realm. A devoted husband to Carol Young and a loving father to Rachel, Kinley, Alex, and Tyler, he cherished his role as a grandfather to eight grandchildren. His impressive educational background included attending Blair Academy for high school and earning degrees from Brown University and the University of Virginia Law School.

In the Army, Richard proudly served his country, reflecting a deep sense of duty that continued throughout his life. Professionally, as the Managing Partner at MCB, he achieved great success, making significant contributions to the Firm and earning the respect of his peers.

Beyond the office, Richard found joy in photography, tennis, and cars, always eager to capture memorable moments, engage in friendly matches, and explore the latest automotive innovations. His dedication extended beyond personal interests, actively participating in charitable endeavors, with donations suggested to be made in his name to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
